Film Studies: Theory, Method and Academic Writing

Prerequisites: Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies and/or Media and Communication Studies, 60 credits.

Content: The course offers an introduction to the genre of academic writing and how to design a research project in the area of film and media studies. Students learn the process of compiling, evaluating and synthesizing knowledge about a research problem or specific area of choice, individually or in pairs. Qualitative methods commonly used in the area of film and media history and theory are discussed and tested. Toward the end of the course, the student presents a draft of a research project, individually or in a pair, and tests his/her acquired knowledge by giving constructive critique to student colleagues' project drafts.

Teaching Methods: Teaching may be conducted in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment: The course can be assessed through written examination, take-home examination, compulsory course components, paper, essay and /or oral examination.
