Content: The course focuses on the underlying mechanisms of toxicological effects as well as how pharmaceuticals and other chemical substances are distributed in the environment and affect biological systems. The mechanistic toxicology section includes studies of mechanisms for chemical carcinogenesis, fetal injury, as well as reproductive and nervous system disorders. The course provides an overview of the principles of toxicology and the methods used to study toxic effects on biological systems. The environmental pharmacology section describes the absorption, distribution, biotransformation and secretion of foreign chemicals. Furthermore, the course deals with molecular mechanisms of metabolism, induction and inhibition of metabolism in conjunction with pharmacological and toxicological aspects of the metabolism of foreign substances. The theoretical concept are complemented with practical laboratory activities.
