Courses for Exchange Students (ECTS) 2018/2019

The Transport of Pollutants in Soil, Water and Air, Second Cycle

Autumn week 36 (2018) - 45 (2018) Appl.code: 51001
Full-time, daytime class

ECTS credits: 15

Level of education: Second Cycle (master level)

Level: A1N

Prerequisites: A first-cycle qualification comprising at least 180 credits of which at least 90 credits are for specialised study in the main field of study chemistry or earth sciences, alternatively biology or environmental science where general and inorganic chemistry is included. The applicant must also have qualifications corresponding to the course "English 6" or "English B" from the Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Content: Knowledge on the transport and fate of chemicals in the environment is an essential part of risk assessment of environmental pollutants. This course emphasizes on the influence of chemical properties on the environmental fate of organic and inorganic compounds, as well as the effects of external physical conditions such as climate, types of sources and chemical processes in the different environmental compartments. Fundamental knowledge from biogeochemistry, hydrology, atmospheric chemistry and transport modelling will be introduced in order to assist in gaining knowledge on how to solve environmental chemistry problems.

Teaching Methods: Teaching consists of lectures, practical laboratory work, case studies, computerbased exercises and practical field work. The course uses problem based learning (PBL).

Assessment:  Written exam, group work, written and oral reports.
