Scientific Methodology and Project Management in Environmental Forensics, Second Cycle

Prerequisites: A first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 credits in Natural Science in which at least 60 credits are for specialized study in the main field of Chemistry, and Chemistry, Second Cycle, 30 Credits are needed. The applicant must also have qualifications corresponding to the course English 6/B from the Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Content: The course aims at addressing possible challenges a chemist meets in both industry and various research environments. The course covers scientific methodology, including scientific writing, presentation and communication, as well as research ethics, study design, qualitative and quantitative research and science philosophy. Other areas that will be addressed in the course are project management, goal setting, project budgeting and leadership. Project management and project work are central parts of the course and problem-based learning methods will be used. Lastly, students will have to present a case at the court room in a role play. Thereby, students will learn to act as experts by presenting their case in a clear, transparent and understandable manner to other experts as well as laymen.

Teaching Methods: Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, case studies and group exercises. The course uses problem-based learning.

Assessment:  Home exam/assignment, exercises, oral and written reports and PBL seminar work.
