EU Law and Public International Law

Prerequisites: Basic Course in Law, 30 ECTS credits.

Content: The course deals with international law as a system and gives an overview of fundamental principles and areas of international law. Areas covered include the use of force and peaceful settlement of disputes, state responsibility for breaches of international law, law of treaties, law of territory and of the sea, humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law.
The course also provides a deeper insight into the European Union's institutional structure and constitutional principles and the methodological issues
associated with the application of EU law. Issues specifically emphasized are: the principles of primacy and direct effect, general principles of law in the EU, the legislative process and the protection of human rights. The course also deals with EU competition law and the foundations of the internal market, namely the free movement of goods, services, people and capital.

Teaching Methods: The course is given in English. The methods of study are lectures and seminars, and moot legislative procedure in sub-course 2, as well as individual study. Great weight is placed on oral and written exercises. Seminars in sub-course 1 are compulsory. Seminars and moot legislative procedure in sub-course 2 are compulsory.
