Global Sustainable Development, Second Cycle

Prerequisites: A first-cycle qualification comprising at least 180 credits of which at least 90 credits are for specialised study in the main field of study chemistry, biology or environmental science. The applicant must also have qualifications corresponding to the course "English 6" or "English B" from the Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Content: In this course students will be introduced with the nature of ecosystems; their function and condition as well as how the systems respond to climate change, chemical pollution and decreasing level of bio diversity. The course aims to give a broad understanding of global environmental issues, impact on the environment from different sources as well as flow of materials and biogeochemical transport mechanisms. The course has an international perspective by connecting to the previous course on multilateral environmental agreements.

Teaching Methods: The course is built according to the principle of problem-based learning (PBL) which promotes active student learning. Instruction consists of lectures and case-studies with minuted group meetings.

Assessment:  Written examination and project work.
