Swedish Language and Culture I

Prerequisites: Standard university admission requirements.

Content: This course focuses on 20th and 21st century Swedish society and language. The roots of the Swedish welfare model as well as the current situation are discussed with an emphasis on questions of democracy and equality. Current debates about the status of the Swedish language, the growing importance of English and the role of minority languages in contemporary Sweden are examined and contextualized.

Teaching Methods: Teaching may be conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops and/or web-based discussions.

Assessment: The course can be assessed through presentations, written papers, seminars, discussions, oral and written assessments.
